SMP Word Merge:  Saving Word 2002 Merge Document Causes Word to Lock Up


Symptoms

 

When attempting to save a Word 2002 Merge Document initiated from SMP, Word locks up.

 

Cause

 

This has only been repeatable using Word 2002 (XP) running on Windows XP.  Microsoft has acknowledged this as a bug.

 

Workaround

 

To work around this issue do the following:

  1. Synch Contacts from SMP to Outlook.
  2. Create a Merge Doc in Word by going to Tools / Letters and Mailings / Mail Merge Wizard.

            

  1. Follow the wizard and on Step 3 of 6 under Select Recipients, click on radio button - Select from Outlook contacts. 
  2. Insert Contact and Company Merge Fields and create the document as required.
  3. Save the Merge Document.
  4. To filter for a Single Contact, move to Step 3 of 6 (lower right) and click on Edit Recipient List (middle right).  In the Mail Merge Recipients Popup Box, click on the Clear All Button to clear all the Select Check Boxes far left.
  5. Click on the Find Button and type in the Contact’s Name you are looking for.  Scroll all the way left, and click on the Select Check Box. 

 

 

To check if the correct Contact has been selected click on the ABC Button on the Tool Bar to display the Contact’s Name.
